When you are new to WebLab, the various course roles are sometimes unclear. What is the difference between an assistant and a grader? And between a grader and a reviewer? Short descriptions for each role might help here.

There are two categories of staff. Lecturers and Assistants are only cosmetic, i.e. they fill the visible lists on the course front-page. The other roles are the actual roles for access control with the following interpretation:

  • Manager: can change these access control lists and can create and edit assignments
  • Graders: this list is used to assign graders for assignments with checklist-based manual grading
  • Reviewers: this list is used to assign second graders to assignments with checklist-based manual grading. For a certain percentage of assignments a second grader is assigned
  • Observers: can see assignments of students, but do not grade

Note that these roles can be assigned for the course as a whole, but also for each assignment or assignment collection via Actions - Edit - Roles.

I think the roles really need to be revised and the interface should clearly describe the rights assigned to each role.

Currently, I cannot find a way to allow the following as asked by Guido:

I have 2 TAs hired for A&D. They should work on the assignments in WebLab, but might not have full access to hidden stuff such as grades. Is there any access level I can give them, so that they can edit assignments, but not grade (or delete) assignments?
