In WebLab, and by emailing the student (with some delay after the reply is posted and not viewed yet).

Update March 2022

It might be good to also trigger an in-app notification as part of the announcement check (e.g. during exams) if it can be implemented efficiently (in-memory map?)

FR in weblab mailbox:

Firstly, the Discussions feature is an important feature that allows students to talk to the staff of the faculty about issues specific to assignments. However, the nature of discussion notifications causes unnecessary delays.
Explanation: WebLab has to be open for you to receive notifications, e.g. that a new message has been posted. I have not been able to conclude whether it is necessary to press the ‘↻ Check for new comments’ button once in a while, but I still do that when I am waiting for a response.

A solution to this would be to dispatch an email once there is a new message in the Discussions tab.

Our reply:

Triggering an email (and an in-app) notification when a new reply is posted would definitely be useful
