From Jonathan in our discussion group:

When importing a paper from Conference Publishing, I get an error “ERROR: Not a valid email address.” The imported data had a couple of invalid addresses, but I replaced them with reasonably formatted (though admittedly fake) ones before saving the paper. There are several authors and I don’t know which one is causing the error (once I entered a reasonably formatted email, no error was showing until I pressed “Save as event”). The error message should be more specific in this case and tell me which address is causing the problem.

(I recognize that I could probably work around this by adding authors one by one, though I haven’t yet figured out how to do this in the system. I also recognize that I should be using a real email address, which I have requested from the authors for which I do have contact information. I will try one or both workarounds next, but in the meantime I wanted to document this limitation of the system so you can improve it when you have time.)
