I think the issue here is that the email field is not used as input for the matching profiles that should appear on the right*.
When I start entering “Tom mur…” in the name field, his profile is shown on the right. From there, you can add Tom as committee member.

*Or maybe you’re on mobile, and the suggestions are placed below the form, which you can then easily miss.

When there is a matching profile that is actually the member you try to add, you need to use the suggested profile. Otherwise, when adding as new person, the system may complain that the “identity is already in use”, which is a (too general) error message telling us that there is already someone with that email address in the system.

I’ll try to improve the member-add panel to prevent these errors from happening.
If you experience issues when adding members using the suggested profiles, please let me know.
